Thanks to everyone who participated and volunteered in our first Community Activity Day.
Approximately 300 people showed up over the span of the event to enjoy the festivities.
There was an energy in the air. One of Mike's main goals is getting into the neighborhoods
and leading the way to a brighter future for our youth.

"A BIG Thanks to everyone who braved the elements for our stew fundraiser. It was a cold, rainy, and windy day, but that didn't stop us! Despite the weather, we had a great turnout of supporters, many of whom showed up at 5:00AM and worked throughout the dreary day. Your support was uplifting and continues to inspire me. This campaign continues to build momentum, which would not be possible without you.  Between now and our next event (TBA), help my campaign by spreading the word."

At least 250 people attended the Saturday kick-off barbecue fundraiser for Danville sheriff’s candidate Mike Mondul.

The event was held at the local Fraternal Order of Police Lodge on Hunter Street. Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor was on hand to lend his support to Mondul.

“I think he’s energetic, young and full of good ideas — Mike is a straight shooter,” Taylor said.

Mondul appreciated Taylor’s support and added his campaign will be low-key until after the November general election, because he wants voters to focus on the presidential race. Mondul will challenge incumbent Sheriff Jim Dooley in November 2009.

Mondul’s running because he thinks the office needs a leadership change and integrity restored.

“And at the same time, some brutal honesty,” he said.

Mondul’s father and other family members attended the event. His dad, Steven, is deputy assistant to Gov. Timothy M. Kaine for emergency preparedness. Steven Mondul said his son is flexible, but looks for ways to make the job better.

Susan Moorefield has known Mondul for 10 years through her son, Stan Moorefield, also a Danville police officer. She believes Mondul would be a good sheriff because law enforcement is such an important part of his life.

“I know him to be honest, a man of integrity, a family man — and I appreciate that,” she said.

William Merrill works with Mondul on the city police force. He said Mondul finds way to make the job better whether it’s the records department or handling the crime scene section.

“He’s not afraid to make changes,” Merrill said.
